Audience controls and exclusions

Set firm limits: location, minimum age, excluded people.

Beginner 10 min

In brief

Audience controls are firm limits: Meta does not deliver outside them, even when Advantage+ is on.

Why it matters

Some constraints are not negotiable: a country where the offer is not available, a legal minimum age, customers who must not be contacted. Controls protect them.

The main settings

  • Locations: countries, regions or cities where the ad can appear. You can also exclude some.
  • Minimum age: younger people will not see the ad.
  • Excluded audiences: people in these custom audiences are removed from delivery.

A concrete example

A clothing shop that only delivers in France sets France as the location, excludes its customers from the last six months and asks for a minimum age of 18. Meta will not deliver outside these limits, even if it finds people who seem interested elsewhere.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Excluding too many people: the audience becomes narrow and delivery costs more.
  • Forgetting to exclude current customers in an acquisition campaign.
  • Setting as a control what should be a simple suggestion.

Key takeaways

  • A control is a limit, not a hint.
  • Exclude what must be excluded, no more.
  • Re-check the controls when the offer, the country or the customers to exclude change.

Practice in TRIALO

In the ad set, set a location and a minimum age, then exclude a custom audience. Follow the estimated size after each setting.

From guide to practice

Exclude an audience and a location, then check the effect on the estimated size.
